The Chair of CIMNE’s Scientific Advisory Council (SAC), Dr. Peter Wriggers, has been awarded the prestigious IACM Congress Medal (Gauss-Newton Medal) by the International Association for Computational Mechanics (IACM). This award recognizes Dr. Wriggers’ outstanding and sustained contributions to the field of computational mechanics in his career.
The IACM Congress Medal honours individuals who have made remarkable contributions of the synergy between mathematics, numerical analysis and mathematical modelling of physical events. The laureate is the highest award given by the IACM and has been presented every two years since 1986, with Dr. Wriggers being the 17th recipient.
Prof. Wriggers joined Leibniz Universität Hannover as a Full Professor of Mechanics in 2008 and currently holds an Emeritus position at the Institute of Continuum Mechanics of the same institution. He obtained his PhD in Civil Engineering at the University of Hannover in 1980 and joined the Scientific Advisory Council at CIMNE in 2012, chairing it since 2020.
CIMNE’s Director, Dr. Javier Bonet, described Dr Wriggers' career as “a testament to innovative research and dedication to the advancement of computational mechanics”, conveying a “significant impact” in the field and making this recognition “well deserved”.
Past recipients of the IACM Congress Medal include CIMNE’s founder and first director, Dr. Eugenio Oñate (2010) and Dr. Xavier Oliver (2020).
