We are very sad to report that Professor Scott Sloan passed away on April 23rd, 2019. It is a great loss to both the computational mechanics and the geotechnical engineering international communities.

Professor Sloan was Laureate Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Newcastle, Australia. He was a Fellow of the Royal Society London, a Fellow of the UK Royal Academy of Engineering and a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science. He was named as the Government of New South Wales Scientist of the Year in 2015 and, recently, he was made an Officer of the Order of Australia. He delivered the 51st Rankine Lecture in 2011.

He was a good friend of CIMNE, he had visited Barcelona many times and he spent two of his sabbatical periods here. We wish to express our deep condolences to Scott’s family, friends and colleagues.
