Applus+ Laboratories and OKTICS, a CIMNE spin-off, join forces to advance the Digital Product Passport

Applus+ Laboratories and OKTICS, a CIMNE spin-off specialising in digital identity and product traceability, have launched a collaboration to develop Digital Product Passport (DPP) solutions.

The agreement will combine OKTICS’ technological capabilities with Applus+ Laboratories’ expertise in testing, certification and regulatory compliance to support manufacturers and industrial companies in the progressive implementation of the DPP, within the framework of the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) and other related regulations.

A dynamic and accessible record of the product life cycle

The Digital Product Passport will enable each product to be linked to a digital identity containing structured, updatable information on aspects such as composition, origin, repairability, environmental impact and end-of-life.

Unlike a conventional label, the DPP can accompany a product throughout the different stages of its life cycle and provide information tailored to the various actors across the value chain.

“We believe the Digital Product Passport should be seen as an opportunity to organise data, improve processes and build new digital capabilities around products. Our collaboration with Applus+ Laboratories allows us to continue developing realistic implementation models, particularly in industrial sectors where traceability, technical documentation and building trust are becoming increasingly important.”

Preparing industry for the rollout of the DPP

The collaboration aims to facilitate the gradual implementation of the Digital Product Passport in companies at different levels of digital maturity. The objective is to adapt solutions to existing processes and systems and prevent the introduction of the DPP from becoming simply an additional administrative burden.

OKTICS and Applus+ Laboratories are already working on pilot projects with manufacturers from different sectors to validate implementation models in real industrial environments. The collaboration will also include outreach and knowledge-transfer activities through webinars, sector-specific events, conferences and specialised content on the development of the Digital Product Passport in Europe.

OKTICS: pioneers in smart labels

OKTICS has developed proprietary technology, originally created at CIMNE and subsequently brought to market through the spin-off, that connects physical objects with dynamic, updatable digital information. Through smart labels, each product can have its own digital identity and become a gateway to specific information on its origin, traceability, characteristics and use.

The technology has already been applied in sectors including textiles, food, mobility and public communication, with solutions designed to improve traceability, expand the information available about products and enable new forms of interaction with users. The alliance with Applus+ Laboratories now extends these capabilities to the deployment of the Digital Product Passport in industrial environments.
