Prof. Eugenio Oñate, honoured at a technical session on computational mechanics

On 15th June, 2023, CIMNE community gathered in a technical session entitled “Computational Mechanics: Past and future at CIMNE and UPC”. The event hosted a tribute to Professor Eugenio Oñate, founder of CIMNE and general director of the centre until 2022.

The technical session reviewed the state of the art of the discipline. For this purpose, it counted with the participation of outstanding speakers both linked to CIMNE and the UPC as well as international experts.

The opening of the session was in charge of the Professor Javier Bonet, General Director of CIMNE since May 2022, and Professor Miguel Cervera, Head of the Structural Mechanics Division. The event was divided in three sessions:

  • Session 1 – International perspective, chaired by the Professor Antonio Huerta. Peter Wriggers (Hannover University, Germany), Bernhard Schrefler (Università di Padova, Italy) and Rainald Lohner (George Mason University, USA) were the speakers of the first session.
  • Session 2Computational Mechanics at the Barcelona School of Civil Engineering was chaired by Esther Real, Director of the Barcelona School of Civil Engineering. This part consisted of three presentations, the first one by the chair of the session and the others two talks were given by Xavier Sanchez-Vila, Head of Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, and by Xavier Oliver, Professor of Continuum Mechanics and Structural Analysis.
  • Session 3 – Computational Mechanics at CIMNE was chaired by Professor Javier Bonet and the speakers were the following ones: Ferran Falcó, Vice President of CIMNE; Sergio Idelsohn and Francisco Zárate, Research Professors of Computational Mechanics; and closed the session Anna Font, Managing Director of CIMNE.

During the event, the professor's professional career was reviewed. The perseverance, the great capacity for work and the close and people-focused character of Professor Eugenio Oñate were highlighted by the speakers of the event.
