Eugenio OñateOn 18th August, 2022, Prof. Eugenio Oñate was elected as Corresponding Member of the Cuban Academy of Sciences.

Prof. Oñate is a professor at Civil Engineering School of Universitat Politécnica de Catalunya (UPC) and founder and vicepresident of CIMNE.

The cooperation of Prof. Eugenio Oñate with Cuba originated in 2003 when an Aula CIMNE was created in Cuba, at the University of las Villas under the direction of Prof. Carlos Recarey.

Since those days CIMNE and Cuba have developed an intense cooperation through the development of joint research activities and scientific publications in cooperation with University of Las Villas and University of Informatic Sciences in La Habana (also an Aula CIMNE since 2015). The cooperation has been recognized by several awards and distinctions of the Cuban Academy of Sciences to Prof. Oñate and other CIMNE researchers.

This cooperation has been supported by Dr. Jose Manuel Saborido, current Ministry of Higher Education of Cuba and former rector of University of Las Villas.

The other scientists of UPC elected as corresponding members of the Academia de Ciencias de Cuba last August are Prof. Eduardo Alonso, founder of the Group of Geomechanis at CIMNE, and Prof. Mateo Valero, director of the Barcelona Supercomputing Center.
