The delegation, led by Party Secretary Xi Jixing, stands alongside CIMNE’s leadership, including Prof. Javier Bonet, Jordi Jiménez, and Prof. Gabriel Bugeda, symbolizing a collaborative meeting focused on aerospace engineering and advanced simulation.

The International Centre for Numerical Methods in Engineering (CIMNE) yesterday received a high-level delegation from the AVIC Shenyang Aircraft Design and Research Institute, one of China’s leading aerospace research organizations. The visit brought together 24 representatives from AVIC Shenyang with CIMNE’s leadership and research teams to explore collaborative opportunities in aerospace engineering and advanced simulation.

The delegation, led by Xi Jixing and including senior researchers and engineers, was welcomed at CIMNE’s headquarters on the North Campus of Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya—Barcelona Tech (UPC) in Barcelona. Prof. Javier Bonet, General Director of CIMNE, hosted the visit alongside Jordi Jiménez, Project Development Director, and Prof. Gabriel Bugeda, Institutional Relations Director.

The meeting featured a series of technical presentations showcasing CIMNE’s research capabilities in areas critical to aerospace innovation. Dr. Álex Ferrer presented on the design of advanced materials and structures for aerospace and aeronautical industries, while Dr. Alejandro Cornejo, from CIMNE’s Aeronautical, Marine, Automotive and Energy Engineering research cluster, discussed numerical modelling of nonlinear processes for solids.

Prof. Ramon Codina and Prof. Michele Chiumenti, both academic leaders from CIMNE’s Solid and Fluid Simulation for Industrial Processes research cluster, provided overviews of the Fluid Mechanics Group‘s research activities and industrial processing capabilities, respectively.

AVIC Shenyang Aircraft Design and Research Institute, also known as 601 Institute, is a premier aerospace research institution under the Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC). The institute specializes in fighter aircraft design and has been instrumental in developing some of China’s most advanced military aircraft programs.

The visit represents a productive opportunity to strengthen institutional ties and explore joint research and innovation pathways between the two organizations. Both institutions share a commitment to advancing sustainable aircraft design through cutting-edge computational engineering and advanced simulation technologies.

This engagement builds upon CIMNE’s extensive history of collaboration with Chinese research institutions, which has been developing through various networks and international projects since 2005.
