CIMNE contributes to the first round robin test on the simulation of the angle of repose using the Discrete Element Method

Feb 1, 2023

The round robin test (simultaneous analysis of the same problem) is a method to investigate the variance and sensitivity of the results provided by different analysts for a given problem. This methodology was first applied to the evaluation of the performance of the discrete element method (DEM). 16 groups from 7 countries around the world participated using different software tools.

Snapshots of the two types of calculations performed with the DEM application of Kratos Multiphysics

Joaquín Irazábal member of the research group on Machine Learning in Civil Engineering, contributed to the experiment with simulations performed using the DEM Application in Kratos Multiphysics. The results showed the capabilities of the code developed at CIMNE to analyze the phenomenon, ranking among the best in terms of accuracy.

In summary, this study highlights recent trends in interparticle constitutive models used with DEM software and will contribute to improve the accuracy of the simulations. It should be noted that the constitutive models used by CIMNE's DEM team are aligned with those of the other participants.

The details of the study have been recently published in open access: Round robin test on angle of repose: DEM simulation results collected from 16 groups around the world.
