CIMNE collaborates with PUCP to develop a software to improve the manufacture of 3D hand prostheses

The CIMNE Industrial Manufacturing Processes research group, led by Professor Michele Chiumenti, works, in collaboration with different working groups of the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru (PUCP), on a project funded by Concytec for the optimization of the design and production process of final pieces for hand prostheses.

Within the framework of this project, a specific software of numerical simulation is developed. “The idea is to develop a numerical instrument to analyze the structural behavior of components manufactured by Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF). Previously, this technology has been used only for rapid prototyping. Now it is intended to use with structural functionalities. We are working on it. We have software that feeds on experimental data based on the printing pattern and, in the case of lattice structures, we use homogenization techniques”, explains Prof. Chiumenti. 

There are polymers with characteristics similar to those of aluminum. Although they cannot reach the values ​​of titanium, the machines and materials are infinitely cheaper. ”The great advantage is to reduce costs for patients through local production taking advantage of the great help provided by calculation software”, explains Prof. Chiumenti.
