CIMNE’s Director Dr. Javier Bonet awarded Grand Prize from the Japan Society for Computational Engineering and Science

juny 11, 2024

CIMNE’s Director, Dr. Javier Bonet, has been awarded the prestigious Grand Prize 2023 from the Japan Society for Computational Engineering and Science (JSCES).

JSCES awarded Dr. Bonet the organization's top recognition as a testament to his outstanding career in computational and numerical methods. Dr. Bonet’s work accounts for significant advances in nonlinear solid mechanics, such as Smooth Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) and stabilized Finite Element and Finite Volume techniques.

The award ceremony was held at the Kobe International Conference Center in Kobe-shi, Hyogo, on June 11 as part of JSCES' 29th Conference on Computational Engineering and Science.

The event included Dr. Bonet’s lecture “First order conservation law formulations in solid dynamics: applications to dynamic crack propagation, contact mechanics and stable SPH discretizations”, where CIMNE’s director described the latest advances in the novel conservation-based formulation of solid and structural dynamics developed by him and co-authors Antonio J. Gil, and Chun Hean Lee.

With over 110 publications accounting for more than 6,000 citations, Dr. Bonet stands as a leading voice in the field of numerical methods. Before joining the International Centre for Numerical Methods in Engineering (CIMNE) as a director in 2022, Dr. Bonet served as Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Research & Enterprise, at the University of Greenwich in London.

With a strong background in civil engineering, Dr Bonet was previously appointed Professor of Computational Engineering and Head of the College of Engineering at Swansea University in Wales, the same university where he defended his doctoral thesis under the supervision of Prof O.C. Zienkiewicz.
