The Minister of Business and Labour, the Honorable Mr. Miquel Sàmper i Rodríguez, together with the Director General for Industry, Mr. Xavier Roca Ramón, have visited this week the headquarters of the International Centre for Numerical Methods in Engineering (CIMNE) in Barcelona.
The meeting has served to showcase the potential of research in numerical methods for the design and optimisation of industrial processes, as well as the work of CIMNE’s Technology Transfer team in developing solutions with real impact on industry.
CIMNE’s General Director, Professor Javier Bonet, and the management team welcomed the delegation with an institutional presentation of the centre. Afterwards, Dr. Michele Chiumenti and Dr. Ramon Codina presented the research cluster in Solid and Fluid Simulation for Industrial Processes, which develops advanced computational models to simulate complex industrial manufacturing processes. The researchers highlighted key applications of their work in the fields of additive manufacturing, friction stir welding, and multiphysics industrial processes.

The visit continued with Jordi Jiménez, CIMNE’s Project Development and Transfer Director, who shared the Tech Transfer team’s experience in transforming cutting-edge research into industrial solutions, fostering innovation, and encouraging the creation of spin-off companies. Javier Marcipar, manager of CIMNE Tecnología, also outlined the key role of this subsidiary in industrializing and commercialising CIMNE technologies, providing essential support to both spin-offs and researchers.

The delegation accompanying the Minister was led by CIMNE’s General Director, Javier Bonet, along with the Director of the UPC School of Civil Engineering and CIMNE Secretary, Prof. Esther Real, and the UPC Vice-Rector for University Policy, Prof. Santiago Silvestre. The meeting also included other members of CIMNE’s management and research teams, such as Anna Font, General Manager; Dr. Gabriel Bugeda, Institutional Director; and Dr. Sebastià Olivella, Scientific Director.
This institutional meeting highlights the ability to transform scientific knowledge into industrial applications through collaboration opportunities between public institutions, research, and industry. As a public research centre, CIMNE reaffirms its commitment to promoting innovation and developing technological solutions tailored to the needs of the regional industrial sector, contributing to the competitiveness and sustainability of Catalonia’s industrial landscape.
