***Video available*** Severo Ochoa Coffee Talk by Manuel de Borja Torrejón – “ReFlex project: combining energy flexibility and energy efficiency to achieve CO2-neutral neighbourhoods”
Friday, February 17th, 2023. Time: 12 noon Hybrid! Agrobiotech Lleida Park, CeDiCo Building, 1st Floor – Martina Castells Room (Lleida) | Session link!
ABSTRACT
ReFlex addresses the new role of buildings as agents in the energy system. Buildings evolve from Consumers to be simultaneously consumers and producers of energy (Prosumers), and can adjust the time course of their electricity consumption to support the balance of supply and demand in the grid (Flexumers). Through simulations, analyses are performed on urban, suburban and rural neighborhoods, considering their energy flexibility potentials. According to the specific neighborhood structures and grid requirements, the aim is to identify retrofit strategies that improve the feasibility and economic efficiency of the measures as well as the resilience of the energy system. In this way, the project supports the transformation towards a climate-neutral building sector and a sustainable energy system.
SPEAKER CV
Manuel de Borja Torrejón (Seville, Spain, 1983). Since his graduation as an Architect in 2009 at University of Seville (US), he has worked on several projects focussed on building renovation and energy management of buildings. His interest in sustainable and environmental design has motivated him to combine his professional activity with academic and research development on these fields at US and Technical University of Munich (TUM), Germany. He currently works as a research and teaching associate at the TUM Chair of Building Technology and Climate Responsive Design, and collaborates with the US research group TEP-130 Architecture, Heritage and Sustainability. As a part of his responsabilities, he developes research projects and coordinates the preparation of project proposals. He also supervises scientific studies at the TUM Department of Architecture and holds lectures on advanced modelling tools for energy performance and user comfort assesment in buildings. Based on the experience gathered during the last years, he decided to carry out a doctoral project on Demand-Side Management in Buildings, which is being jointly supervised at TUM and US. Along with his research and teaching activity, he participates in architectural competitions giving support to fellow architects in the definition of passive design and energy concepts for buildings.
