  • For its contribution to the development of new methods for analysis and design for products and processes in engineering.
  • For the fostering of cooperation between industry and university research groups.
  • For many training activities and the promotion of science and technology at the international level.
Special mention to the Ciutat de Barcelona Award 1999

The city of Barcelona awarded CIMNE a Special Mention to the Ciutat de Barcelona Award, 1999, in the category of Technological Research for the work carried out by Drs. P. Roca, M. Cervera, and E. Oñate on the modeling and structural analysis of the Barcelona Cathedral.

IST Award to the best product of the Information Society Technologies Programme of European Commission (EC), 2001

The European Comission (EC) granted the IST Award to CIMNE for the pre/post processor system GiD, developed at the centre.

Ciutat de Barcelona Award in Technological Research, 2002

On 11 February 2003, the Ciutat de Barcelona Award for Technological Research was presented to the CIMNE research team, comprising Eugenio Oñate, Ramon Ribó, Enrique Escolano, Miquel Pasenau and Jorge Suit Pérez, in recognition of their development of the GID system. This innovative, user-friendly graphical interface enables geometric modelling and visualisation of numerical simulation results.

Duran i Farrell Award for Research and Technology, Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, 2004

The award was presented to CIMNE scientists Dr Oñate and Dr García in recognition of their work entitled Development of a new finite element code for the hydrodynamic study of vessels. Applications to the Design of Sailing Ships for the America’s Cup Race.

AINE Award, 2010

CIMNE was honoured with the 2010 AINE Award in recognition of its innovation in the naval sector. The award is promoted by the Spanish Association of Naval Engineers (Asociación de Ingenieros Navales de España), AINE.

Cuban National Prize to the Scientific Research Result, Cuban Academy of Sciences, 2016

This award recognises the research project entitled ‘Development of advanced technologies for the generation and packaging of particles focused on discrete element methods’.

The research was carried out by the Central University ‘Las Villas’ of Cuba (UCLV) and the International Centre for Numerical Methods in Engineering (CIMNE), in collaboration with the UCLV-CIMNE Lab. The project also involved collaboration from the universities of Leuven (KU Leuven, Belgium) and Brasília (UnB, Brazil), as well as other local and international institutions.

Severo Ochoa Accrediation, Spanish Ministry for Science, 2019

The International Centre for Numerical Methods in Engineering was accredited as a ‘Severo Ochoa Centre of Excellence’ by the Spanish State Research Agency (attached to the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities) for the period 2019–2023.

JEC Innovation Award, 2025

The FIBRE4YARDS project, coordinated by Xavier Martínez Garcia —professor at the Faculty of Nautical Studies of Barcelona (FNB-UPC) and researcher at CIMNE— received the prestigious JEC Innovation Award 2025 in the Maritime Transportation & Shipbuilding category, a global benchmark distinction in the field of advanced materials. The project successfully applied the Shipyard 4.0 concept to transform European shipbuilding through the adoption of advanced manufacturing technologies and the use of composite materials. Developed by a consortium of thirteen partners from six countries, FIBRE4YARDS integrates digital twin solutions, modular construction techniques, and automation to boost efficiency, reduce environmental impact and lower production costs. The initiative brings together experts from CIMNE and UPC, including Dr. Daniel di Capua, Dr. Fermín Otero, Dr. Rafael Pacheco, Dr. Francesc Turon, Daniel Sa and Montserrat Dolz.
