Smarter buildings for increased resilience and flexibility of the electrical system

Innovation Unit
Building, Energy and Environment (BeeGroup)
BEE Group caters its knowledge and long expertise to users and communities, developing user-driven tools and models to help consumers use energy efficiently, boost awareness, and support an equitable and sustainable energy transition.
At BEE Group, we design demand-side management strategies that support the transition toward resilient, flexible buildings and energy network systems. Residential blocks and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are often overlooked, yet they represent a major untapped source of fast, distributed flexibility. Their capacity to adapt swiftly is especially valuable in times of grid stress, price spikes, or temporary blackouts—when local balancing and demand curtailment can make a real difference.
The increasing share of variable renewable energy (VRE), such as solar and wind, calls for new forms of flexibility to sustain grid stability. That’s where buildings can evolve into active players in the energy system. We create innovative demand response (DR) services for residential and commercial consumers by integrating smart control systems, energy storage and local smart grid strategies.
Our work in real-life pilot projects like Dedalus and Cosmic demonstrates how flexible urban districts can generate meaningful impact. Our approach includes:
• Identifying and activating energy flexibility potential in buildings and industrial facilities.
• Enabling real-time response to price signals and grid events.
• Contributing to grid reliability and local energy resilience through district-based energy storage.
• Developing smart grids and microgrids with coordinated control of DER (PV, BESS, EVs), islanding strategies, and energy sharing at building or district scale.
