ABSTRACT

“Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn.” ― Xun Kuang, Chinese Confucian philosopher

Engineering tasks tend to focus primarily on “intellectual” and “physical” activities such as computing, manufacturing, building, monitoring, sensoring, rules and regulations, and classroom-based learning of physical laws, maths and procedures.

There is however a need to improve those interventions with a human factors paradigm, by better understanding the role of emotions cognitive biases, and cultural factors that affect performance, motivation or efficiency of the work.
Expressing and coping with emotions through art, narrative, and creativity offers new opportunities for a more holistic and humane approach to engineering needs, in particular a greater and much more enduring impact on work behaviour.
