The ”la Caixa” Foundation is offering 40 three-year postdoctoral fellowships for the recruitment of experienced researchers to carry out their projects at accredited centres with the Severo Ochoa or María de Maeztu excellence award, Institutos de Salud Carlos III and R&D units classified as Excellent by the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia of Portugal. The research must be carried out in the research areas of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), including Bio and Health Sciences.
The call for applications is intended for researchers who finished their doctoral degree between the 5th of October, 2016 and the 5th of October, 2021 and also fulfil the requirements for mobility between countries.
The fellow in case of be granted should start work at the host institution between 2nd May and 31st December 2024. The ”la Caixa” Foundation must be notified of the fellow's start date at the host institution prior to this date and as soon as an agreement is reached.
LA CAIXA Postdoctoral Junior Leader fellowships at a glance

The objective is the hiring of excellent researchers, of any nationality, who wish to continue their research career in Spanish or Portuguese territory in the areas of health and life sciences, technology, physics, engineering and mathematics (STEM areas).
This programme aims to promote high quality and innovative research in Spain and Portugal and to support the best scientific talents, who are offered an attractive and competitive environment in which to carry out research of excellence.
- Complementary Training Programme: The Junior Leader postdoctoral fellowship programme includes an interdisciplinary training programme designed specifically for our fellows and aimed at boosting innovation and leadership. This program has been designed specifically for our fellows by industry-leading international companies. Two sessions will be organized at the beginning of the scholarship and during the third year. Each session will last between two and five days and the “la Caixa” Foundation will cover the costs of these sessions, including travel and accommodation costs. In addition, online sessions will be offered.
- International stays: In order to complement their research career, the fellows must develop an international or intersectoral stay of up to six months in an institution freely chosen by them, which will enable them to increase their transversal competences.
TYPES OF GRANTS
Postdoctoral Junior Leader – Incoming Call:
25 post-doctoral grants (3-years) for researchers of all nationalities, who are offered a work contract to carry out a research project in Spanish centres accredited with the Severo Ochoa awards of excellence, María de Maeztu or the Carlos III Health Research Institute, or in Portuguese centers evaluated as excellent by the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia de Portugal. To be admitted, candidates must meet the following requirements:
Experience: Have obtained the title of doctor between two and seven years before the closing of the call (between 05/10/2016 and 05/10/21). The date of obtaining the doctorate/a degree shall be understood as the date of the act of defense of the doctoral thesis. Special deadlines apply for candidates with a career break in research.
Mobility: For candidates interested in Spanish centres or units: candidates may not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Spain for more than 12 months in the three years immediately preceding the closing date of the call.
Postdoctoral Junior Leader – Retaining Call:
15 post-doctoral grants for researchers of all nationalities to carry out their research activity in any university or research centre in Spain or Portugal.
Experience: Have obtained the title of doctor between two and seven years before the closing of the call (between 05/10/2016 and 05/10/21). The date of obtaining the doctorate/a degree shall be understood as the date of the act of defense of the doctoral thesis. Special deadlines apply for candidates with a career break in research.
Candidates must have completed research stays in centres or universities outside Spain (or outside Portugal for those joining Portuguese centres), during the doctorate or post-doctoral period, for a total of at least 6 months, before the closing of the call.
Mobility: For candidates interested in Spanish institutions or universities: Candidates must have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Spain for more than 12 months in the three years immediately preceding the closing date of the call.
FINANCIAL SUPPORT
The maximum financial amount of the grant is 305,100 €, in three annual payments of 97,500 € (3 years fellowship).
- Wage costs: € 59,000 gross per year that the host institution will dedicate to the recruitment of the grant holder in accordance with the labour legislation in force in Spain or Portugal. The minimum annual gross wage that the host institution must offer to the grant holder is €44,300.
- Research costs: 38.500 € gross per year for expenses directly related to the development of the project including fungible, equipment, recruitment of personnel, registration to conferences or courses, research stays, intellectual property costs, among others.
- Annual family allowance: €1,200 gross per year for each dependent child.
- Mobility aid: €5,400 gross at the start of the grant for trainees who need to move to the host institution (those who need a transfer over 50 km away).
