PARTICLES COURSE 2025

📍 Barcelona, Spain

🏨 UPC Campus Nord

📅 18-19 October 2025

The Short Course on Particle-Based Methods in Engineering and Applied Science (PARTICLES COURSE 2025) will be held in Barcelona, Spain, on 18-19 October, 2025. It will be possible to attend the course either in-presence or online.

The course aims at giving an overview of the theory and applications of the most used particle methods. With Particle Methods we refer to those numerical methodologies using the concept of particles either to carry the information of the deforming continuum, such as the Material Point Method (MPM), Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH), the Particle Finite Element Method (PFEM), and the Lattice-Boltzmann Method (LBM), or to represent computationally real physical particles, like in the Discrete Element Method (DEM).

The course will give a detailed presentation of the theoretical bases and implementation aspects of the mentioned methods. The brand-new formulations and applications to complex Engineering problems will be presented and an extended overview of the existent literature will be also provided.

PARTICLES COURSE is one of the Advanced Courses of the European Community on Computational Methods in Applied Sciences (ECCOMAS)

The lectures will be given by expert developers and users of the mentioned particle-based methods coming from both the academic and the industry. The courses will take place at the Room C1-001 in CIMNE and are addressed to master, doctoral and post-doctoral students, more in general, to all those scientists and engineers wishing to learn the basics of particle-based computational methods.
