Cycle: SOS! Here the Earth. Challenges and challenges of Global Change

In the last fifty years there has been a substantial alteration in how fresh water inputs from the coast are produced and how they influence marine circulation. These alterations affect the progressive warming of Catalan coastal waters and a reduction in the gas absorption capacity by the sea. This fact worsens in summer, coinciding with the increase in the emission of gases into the environment due to the use of internal combustion engines such as SOx, NOx and CO2.

The loss of these ecosystem services affects the health of coastal ecosystems and of the people living in populations close to the sea. For this reason, in recent years there has been a push for the use of cleaner fuels in maritime transport and the creation of areas where there is a control over the gases emitted by ships. The LIFE4MEDECA project is a LIFE project in which CIMNE participates as a partner, to support the preparation of Emission Control Zones (ECAs) in the Mediterranean Sea and promote their decarbonisation.

Furthermore, CIMNE participates in the development of a Territorial Prediction Platform within the framework of the PIPLATES project, a project financed by the Advanced Digital Technologies Program of the Generalitat de Catalunya. During the exhibition it will be explained how the development of this platform can be relevant as a support for the success of the LIFE4MEDECA project and to increase the resilience of these coastal ecosystems.
