A CERCA study about gender in the scientific careers reveals important imbalances

Feb 11, 2020

Coinciding with the celebration of the International Day of Girls and Women in Science, the Institution CERCA Centres, of which CIMNE is a member, has published a gender study of scientific careers.

This report notes that although there are more women than men in the early stages of the scientific career, senior positions are mostly held by men. Predoctoral studies are done by 55% of women, meanwhile the 45% of predoctorals are men, but only 27% of women become group leaders. This figure, in the case of science and engineering are lower: only 17% of group leaders are women.

According to the CERCA study, the imbalance between men and women begins just at the time of finishing the doctorate: the scientific staff (postdoctoral positions included) is made up of 46% of women versus 54% of men.

The Institution CERCA centers has promoted some actions aimed at promoting policies of gender, as for example the implementation of a Gender Plan, developed by 96% of its members.
