CIMNE successfully coordinates project to improve ship building

Dec 21, 2023

The FIBRE4YARDS project, which aims to maintain Europe's global leadership in shipbuilding and ship maintenance through advanced and innovative fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) manufacturing technologies, draw to a close with a final dissemination event in Nantes, France, on 13 December.

The project, coordinated by CIMNE, focused on the entire value chain of the shipyards and their ecosystem, and introduced cutting-edge technologies, including advanced manufacturing processes and materials, and digital simulations to improve shipbuilding.

FIBRE4YARDS used smart and secure engineering, manufacturing, and data sharing concepts in ship production and embedded highly automated FRP production technologies to develop and validate novel digitalised engineering and analysis simulation solutions for small and medium length fibre-based ships.

Ultimately, this European project facilitated the industrial development of the “Shipyard 4.0” concept for advanced ship production, providing guidelines for design, production, certification, and staff training to develop business plans and Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) strategies for shipyards.

The Final Dissemination Event

Project coordinator Dr. Xavier Martínez, from the Composites and Advanced Materials for Multifunctional Structures research group at CIMNE, presented the project to more than 45 research and industry experts from the shipbuilding and naval sectors at the fourth and final dissemination event, where the European consortium partners gave their closing remarks.

The first part of the dissemination event featured presentations from FIBRE4YARDS partners, including the introductory talk “Defining the future of shipbuilding, presented by Dr. Martínez, and “OSI4IOT: The new Shipyard 4.0”, co-presented by Dr. Daniel Di Capua, from the Structural Mechanics research group at CIMNE.

The second part of the event took place at the IRT Jules Verne site in Nantes, France, where the full-scale demonstrator of the project was presented. This demonstrator successfully tested the innovative production technologies developed in the project.

The FIBRE4YARDS project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 101006860.
