In mid-September, CIMNE researcher Pere Andreu Ubach took part in a conference on sand management for beach sustainability, organised by Sitges Town Council [video available]. The aim of the meeting was to find the best solutions and actions to conserve and restore coastal sand, while preserving ecosystems.
During his speech, Pere Andreu Ubach presented the project «Inflatable breakwaters: an innovative and sustainable solution to the challenge of coastal sediment management», which is based on a system of inflatable structures parallel to the coastline, which, under the supervision of specialists, are fully or partially activated to protect the platforms of the reservoirs from rough seas.
Afterwards, Ubach gave an interview to local media Ràdio Maricel [check it out!], where he explained the proposal in more detail and proposed a technical debate to help develop a future project that would involve the elimination of a large part of the current breakwaters.
