ePLANET: improving energy efficiency decision making in public buildings

Published: 16/09/2021

The European ePLANET project will use the most innovative tools in artificial intelligence and big data to leverage and exploit energy data from public buildings in order to obtain empirical results on the implementation of energy efficiency measures.

One of the main challenges to reach the targets of the Energy Transition is to improve coordination between local authorities and regional governments in order to optimise the decision-making process, coherence and consistency of the implementation of Energy Efficiency Measures (EEMs) in buildings. The ePLANET project will meet this challenge by encouraging the digitalization of building energy data, EEMs and plans enabling an interoperable ecosystem of data and tools to support decision making on the energy transition, putting it into practice in the public sector.

Eplanet

ePLANET builds on existing infrastructure, from the SHERPA and EDInet projects, enabling massive buildings data gathering, making energy efficiency data and measures implemented in buildings comparable and interoperable with existing local initiatives and regional and national plans, analysing these data and providing relevant results to key stakeholders. This will support better (more informed, more transparent and faster) decision-making, contributing to improved monitoring and verification systems. This will enable interoperability between local and regional authorities for the joint implementation of energy efficiency measures, favouring a more efficient use of public spending.

ePLANET is a three-years project under the Horizon 2020 programe. During the first half, a proof of concept will be developed in three pilot regions in the province of Girona, the island of Crete and in the Zlín region (Czech Republic). This proof of concept will ensure the correct deployment of developed tools and to cover the real needs of public authorities in the energy transition. The second half, will focus on scaling up and applying the ePLANET tools and methodology to the three pilots, as well as replicating the results in other regions of Europe. To ensure the involvement of new regions and local authorities, the project will leverage existing initiatives (Covenant of Mayors and ManagEnergy) in which different project partners have a strong influence and prior involvement.

Partnership Eplanet

The project consortium is integrated by 10 partners from 6 countries and consist in energy agencies, building data owners, associations local governments, experts in buildings and communication, all coordinated by the International Centre for Numerical Methods in Engineering (CIMNE).

The project will start on 27 and 28 September in the city of Girona where the partners will meet to organise the tasks and discuss key aspects of the project.
