The project Sea Traffic Management that aims to create a safer, more efficient and environmentally friendly maritime sector is now starting its last year. In this final phase, the project has been awarded two Global Port Forum awards, both recognise the innovation and the research & development associated to Port Collaborative Decision Making (PortCDM) as an emerging digital innovation.

STM is project funded by INEA, co-financed by the European Union within the CEF Programme 2014-2020, and coordinated by Swedish Maritime Administration. Spain has an important representation: CIMNE (through its Marine and TIC research groups), the Port Authority of Valencia and Port Authority of Barcelona are among their partners. Spain covers the entire range of project activities. As an example, the simulators of the Jovellanos Centre and the Nautical School are fully integrated into the simulator network. With the simulations these centres increase their training capacity for the sailors of the future where safety and the human factor are still great concern of the sector, to achieve minimize the occurrence of maritime accidents.

5th session of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Sub-Committee on Navigation, Communications and Search and Rescue (NCSR)

On February the 21st, STM was invited to share the STM progress to the 5th session of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Sub-Committee on Navigation, Communications and Search and Rescue (NCSR). The progress of STM and its alignment with IMO e-Navigation strategy was the focus when the STM project presented to the delegates of the sub-committee. Jon Leon Ervik, Norwegian Coastal Administration and IMO-delegate to NCSR5, says: “STM is an important contributor to the realization of several e-navigation services and solutions. The standards that STM have developed, and are continuing to drive, make the infrastructure for information exchange interoperable. The cooperation between the STM consortium and Norwegian initiatives, like Norway’s Single Window ship reporting system and Sesame 2, enables digital services to be developed faster while making them more coherent. Projects and testbeds like these connect the industry, R&D, users and authorities in the necessary process, taking e-navigation from theory to practical solutions".

During 2018, the STM project will follow information on the progress and conclusions on results achieved. There is a lot of expectation as the project should enter in its deployment phase from 2019. So, in 2018 it has to define its continuation and extension, due to the project is the most ambitious and global that implements the e-navegation strategy of the IMO.
