2010-2013. Multi-scale reinforcement of semi-crystalline thermoplastic sheets and honeycombs (M-RECT)
The M-RECT aimed to create multi-scale – reinforced semi-crystalline thermoplastics, which will outperform all reinforced polymers in terms of strength, stiffness and mainly damping, by developing and upscaling of the art production procedures, within cost-efficient manufacturing routes. The project sought to develop generic technology for production, modelling and design of high-performance, light weight reinforced thermoplastics. The multi-scale reinforcement comprised of disentangled-dispersed-straightened-aligned to polymer molecules multi-walled carbon nanotubes and also fully impregnated long carbon fibers. The selected semi-crystalline thermoplastics were the Poly-Ether-Ether-Ketone and also the 90% cheaper Poly-Phenylene-Sulphide. Suitable numerical model and tools were developed for modelling and designing such structures based on Finite Element Analysis techniques. Validation of the developed models and software by comparing them with reference to the mechanical test results was done.
