Abstract |
The LIFE4MEDECA project, funded within the LIFE 2020 CALL for Preparatory Projects, aims to build consensus and awareness about the creation of an Emission Control Area (ECA) in the Mediterranean as currently being discussed within the Barcelona Convention. The project, which will last 3 years starting in January 2021, is coordinated by the Port System Authority of the Northern Tyrrhenian Sea (ports of Livorno, Piombino, island of Elba and Capraia) and include highly qualified partners from Italy, Israel, Spain, Denmark and Germany and is supported by SGD4MED (CS MARE Foundation and Fundacion Philippe Cousteau) as far as stakeholders’ involvement is concerned.
In addition to the technical/economic studies that will be developed, a significant element of the project is the involvement of a large group of stakeholders (public and regulatory authorities, shipping companies, local communities) with whom to assess the obstacles/benefits of reducing maritime emissions in the Mediterranean and the related socio-economic impacts.
The project has a budget of 1.6 million euros co-financed for 60% by the LIFE programme and for a further 25% by the Italian Ministry of the Environment and Protection of the Territory and the Sea, the French Ministry of the Sea, the Ductch Ministry of Infrastructure and Management of the Sea and the Spanish Ministry of Mobility and Transport. |
The LIFE4MEDECA project is co-financed by the LIFE Program of the European Union (LIFE20 PRE/IT/000002)
