Abstract SMART (SMart Antennas system for Radio Transceivers) project aims at achieving global leadership of Europe in wireless markets and applications by studying and developing a new generation of antennas system dedicated to radio equipments for voice and data wireless networks. One major challenge of the project will be to find low cost and efficient solution as required by the market. The products will have to be able to offer a high efficiency based on the adequate Interconnection and Packaging technologies for antenna. These may be used either to achieve a higher coverage for the global networks and/or to reduce the transmission power to save batteries and to reduce impact for the user (SAR - Specific Absorption Rate). EMC compatibility issues within a multi-standard environment is of great concern. The developments SMART project aims at qualifying: -new techniques of signal processing to increase the efficiency. -new tools for antenna development and product qualification. -new package and interconnection for higher integration and SAR requirements of antenna systems. Advanced broadband micro-optical signal processing circuits . The antenna will be considered as an active part of the system using signal processing techniques to achieve better performances.
