Abstract The outcome of DesignforPM will be a modular e-learning course targeted firstly at industrial designers and engineers. It will enable them to design superior components/products to be manufactured using the powder metallurgy (PM) production process. The main target sectors are the automotive, construction and light engineering industries. One specific target group will be in Central and Eastern Europe, which is an area with high growth in auto production/design and this will be addressed using our Slovakian partner. As a further target content will also be incorporated by universities into their courses for students in relevant subjects, with the objective of educating the designers and engineers of the future. The need for DesignforPM has been defined in the 2004 industry roadmap "Vision 2020 Future Developments for the European PM Industry¿ by PM industry working groups, as a result of feedback from end users. This roadmap is an analysis of the PM sector, including key drivers and requirements, to improve the long-term competitiveness of the European PM industry. DesignforPM represents a sectoral level approach to this challenge and the key players are well placed to identify skills needs challenges and answers. There is significant innovation within DesignforPM including: working at a sector level on e-learning, giving training institutions from three different sectors a common set of industry tested tools, plus linking work related VET to HE activity. Finally as part of its valorisation DesignforPM will be linked to an existing online database used by designers&engineers in the target sectors. Funded by industry the database contains a large amount of numerical data relating to the properties of PM materials and its effectiveness will be significantly enhanced by the increasing the capabilities of its users. The valorisation strategy itself has been conceived to ensure that the results will be utilised by organisations that have their own benefits in ensuring the uptake and use of DesignforPM. These reasons vary according to the specific partner but essentially they are aligned at increasing the use of PM's near net shape technology so as to ultimately increase the competitiveness of European industry. The presence of the industry association EPMA will also ensure through its wide European level contacts with both industry and academic organisations, that dissemination and valorisation will take place across the PM sector and down its supply chain. The continuation of the impact beyond the end of the project is a key essential from the partner's point of view and a major driver behind the application. The work of the EPMA is dedicated to the ongoing development and promotion of the PM industry and this project provides a major opportunity to do so for many years to come. The capacity of the partnership is excellent and the partners have been specifically selected from a larger group of participants who volunteered to join the project in order to ensure the optimal mix of capability and capacity. This is an excellent example of how a sectoral approach can bring added value in VET at a European level.
