We look at trends based on new vessel orders by the major shipping lines.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/piernext.portdebarcelona.cat\/en\/authors\/carles-rua-en-2\/\"><b>Carles R\u00faa<\/b><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carles R\u00faa is the Strategic Projects and Innovation Manager at Port de Barcelona and Director of the Master\u2019s degree in Executive in Supply Chain Management at the UPC.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/piernext.portdebarcelona.cat\/en\/authors\/javier-garrido-en\/\"><b>Javier Garrido<\/b><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Javier Garrido is a researcher at the Center of Innovation and Transport (CENIT) and PhD student at Port de Barcelona.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In June 2022, the Chinese shipyard\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hudong%E2%80%93Zhonghua_Shipbuilding\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hudong Zhonghua Shipbuilding<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0officially handed over to\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.evergreen-marine.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Evergreen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vesselfinder.com\/es\/vessels\/EVER-ALOT-IMO-9893955-MMSI-352001259\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ever Alot<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the\u00a0<\/span><b>largest container ship ever built<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. With a capacity of 24,004 TEU, it is the first to break the 24,000 TEU barrier. The MSC Tessa, with similar dimensions to the Ever Alot, but with a slightly larger capacity of 24,116 TEU, will be delivered shortly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Will these two container ships set the trend for the industry? Will we continue to see bigger and bigger ships? Are the economies of scale of mega-ships beneficial for the environment?
