\"ManuelIt is very sad and painful for me to announce the death of Prof. Manuel Casteleiro<\/strong> on Thursday April 22th, 2021, after a long illness. Prof. Casteleiro was a pioneer in the development of numerical methods in Spain<\/strong>. He was the founder and excellent professor of the School of Civil Engineering of Barcelona<\/a><\/strong> at the Technical University of Catalonia (UPC · BarcelonaTech)<\/a><\/strong> for many years. In 1992 he transferred his chair to the School of Civil Engineering of A Coruña University<\/a><\/strong> (Galicia, Spain), of which he was director for a long period<\/strong>. He was currently a professor emeritus at that university.<\/p>\n

He was also the founder of CIMNE and a permanent collaborator of the centre during the last three decades through various academic and scientific activities. He was currently a member of the Scientific Advisory Council of CIMNE<\/strong> and of the Board of Directors<\/strong> of the company CIMNE Tecnología SA<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Professor Casteleiro has been a great researcher in the field of numerical methods and their applications in engineering and applied sciences<\/strong>. In this field he has published numerous scientific papers in the best international journals. He was founder and president of the Spanish Association for Numerical Methods in Engineering (SEMNI)<\/a><\/strong> and member of the General Council of the International Association for Computational Mechanics (IACM)<\/strong><\/a>. He has received various awards and distinctions, among which I note the SEMNI Award<\/strong> for scientific achievements and the IACM Fellow Award<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

But above all he was a good person and an exceptional colleague<\/strong>. Gifted with an extraordinary capacity to empathize with everyone, he made countless friends in all the academic and personal forums that he frequented. He was always willing to offer his selfless help to any cause in favor of the university, or to solve the innumerable problems that arose in his constant activity.<\/strong> I owe him my incorporation to the UPC in 1979. I was very lucky to meet him at the right time and I have been fortunate to consider myself his friend ever since. We will miss him very much. My condolences and sympathy to his family on my own behalf, as well as on behalf of CIMNE and his colleagues at the UPC. Rest in peace.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Me es muy triste y doloroso anunciar el fallecimiento del Prof. Manuel Casteleiro<\/strong> el jueves 22 de Abril, tras una larga enfermedad. El Prof. Casteleiro fue pionero en el desarrollo de los métodos numéricos en España<\/strong>. Fue fundador y excelente profesor de la Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería de Caminos, Canales y Puertos de Barcelona<\/a><\/strong> en la UPC · BarcelonaTech<\/a> <\/strong>durante muchos años. En 1992 trasladó su cátedra a la Escuela de Ingenieros de Caminos de A Coruña (Galicia)<\/a><\/strong>, de la que fue director durante un largo periodo. En la actualidad era catedrático emérito de esa universidad.<\/p>\n

También fue fundador de CIMNE y colaborador permanente del centro durante las tres últimas décadas, a través de diversas actividades académicas y científicas. Actualmente era miembro del Consejo Científico Asesor de CIMNE<\/strong> y del Consejo de Administración<\/strong> de la empresa CIMNE Tecnología SA<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

El profesor Casteleiro ha sido un gran investigador en el ámbito de los métodos numéricos y sus aplicaciones en ingeniería y ciencias aplicadas, y en ese ámbito ha publicado números trabajos científicos en las mejores revistas internacionales. Fue fundador y presidente de la Sociedad Española de Métodos Numéricos en Ingeniería (SEMNI)<\/strong><\/a> y miembro del General Council de la International Association for Computational Mechanics (IACM)<\/strong><\/a>. Ha tenido diversos premios y distinciones, entre los que destacan el premio SEMNI<\/strong> a la trayectoria científica y la Fellow Award de la IACM<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Pero sobre todo era una buena persona y un excepcional compañero<\/strong>. Dotado de un extraordinario capacidad para empatizar con todo el mundo, ha hecho innumerables amigos en todos los foros académicos y personales que ha frecuentado. Siempre dispuesto a ofrecer su ayuda desinteresada a cualquier causa en favor de la universidad<\/strong>, o para resolver los innumerables problemas que le surgían en su constante actividad. A él le debo mi incorporación a la UPC en 1979. Tuve la gran suerte de conocerle en el momento oportuno y he sido afortunado de considerarme un amigo suyo desde entonces. Lo echaremos mucho de menos.
