Con gran pesar escribo estas líneas con motivo del fallecimiento del profesor Benjamín Suárez Arroyo<\/strong> en la madrugada del lunes 24 de enero de 2022.<\/p>\n Decía Aristóteles que de todos los regalos, el más valioso es un buen amigo.<\/strong> Y eso es lo que Benjamín ha sido para mí, y seguro que para todos los que lo han conocido bien en muchas partes de España y Latino América. Personas en las que Benjamin ha dejado una profunda huella de amistad y admiración por sus muchas cualidades humanas.<\/p>\n Benjamín ha sido un gran profesional en todos los campos en los que ha participado.<\/strong> Su labor ha sido esencial en la creación y progreso de CIMNE<\/strong> durante los últimos 35 años. En la Universidad Politécnica de Cataluña (UPC) destacó como un excelente profesor e investigador<\/strong>, y también como gestor fuera de serie<\/strong> en la dirección de la Escuela de Ingenieros de Caminos de Barcelona<\/strong>, la Fundación de la UPC<\/strong> y en diversos cargos académicos en la universidad y otras organizaciones, como la Sociedad Española de Métodos Numéricos en Ingeniería (SEMNI).<\/p>\n Es destacable su compromiso con el diseño de la enseñanza superior universitaria en España<\/strong>, a través de la ANECA, tarea que extendió al ámbito latinoamericano, colaborando con universidades de diversos países.<\/p>\n Nunca estuvo desconectado de la aplicación práctica de sus investigaciones.<\/strong> Lideró muchos proyectos en colaboración con empresas, así como diversas iniciativas relativas a la transferencia de tecnología a la industria.<\/p>\n Pero las cualidades de Benjamín han transcendido al ámbito profesional.<\/strong> Humanidad, talante conciliador, empatía, inteligencia emocional, generosidad y disponibilidad para ayudar a otros, han sido las señas de su identidad que le han distinguido y que todos los que le han conocido bien, hemos apreciado por encima de todo.<\/p>\n En los últimos años nos ha dejado un último ejemplo de cómo afrontar una situación personal adversa<\/strong> por una salud en deterioro, con unas condiciones de contexto indeseables por la pandemia del Covid. Su entereza, serenidad, y ganas de participar en la solución de los problemas cotidianos durante su enfermedad, y hasta el último momento, han sido extraordinarios.<\/p>\n Ciertamente, no ha podido tener un entorno familiar mejor. Su esposa Virginia, sus hijos Jorge y Nacho, sus nueras Judith y Fer, y sus tres nietas han sido su punto de apoyo e inspiración<\/strong>, principalmente en los últimos años. Les agradezco mucho ese apoyo, que seguro ha ayudado a configurar esa personalidad de Benjamín, que tanto apreciamos. El paso del tiempo mitigará el dolor que ahora sentimos, y realzará las muchas virtudes de Benjamín. Seguro que su memoria nos ayudará a superar las dificultades que encontramos cada día en nuestra travesía por este mundo.<\/p>\n Muchas gracias Benjamín por todo lo que nos has aportado.<\/strong><\/p>\n Descansa en paz<\/strong><\/p>\n Eugenio Oñate <\/i> With great sorrow I write these lines on the occasion of the death of Professor Benjamín Suárez<\/strong> on the early morning of monday January 24th 2022.<\/p>\n Aristotle said that of all gifts, the most valuable is a good friend.<\/strong> And that is what Benjamín has been for me, and I am sure that for all those who have known him well in many parts of Spain and Latin America. People in whom Benjamin has left a deep imprint of friendship and admiration for his many human qualities.<\/p>\n Benjamín has been a great professional in all the fields in which he has participated.<\/strong> His work has been essential in the creation and progress of CIMNE<\/strong> during the last 35 years. At the Technical University of Cataluña (UPC) he standed out as an excellent professor and researcher<\/strong>, and also as an outstanding manager<\/strong> in the direction of the Barcelona School of Civil Engineering<\/strong> and in various positions at UPC and other organizations<\/strong>, collaborating with universities from different countries.<\/p>\n He was never disconnected from the practical application of his research.<\/strong> He leaded many projects in collaboration with companies, as well as various initiatives related to the transfer of technology to industry.<\/p>\n But Benjamin's qualities have transcended to the professional field<\/strong>. Humanity, capacity to mediate in all kind of difficult situations, empathy, emotional intelligence, generosity and availability to help others, have been the signs of his identity that have distinguished him and that all of those who have known him well have appreciated above all.<\/p>\n In recent years, he has left us one last example of how to deal with an adverse personal situation due to the deterioration of his health<\/strong>, with undesirable boundary conditions due to the Covid pandemic. His integrity, serenity, and wish to participate in the solution of daily problems during his illness, and up to the last moment, have been extraordinary.<\/p>\n Certainly, he could not have had a better family environment. His wife Virginia, his sons Jorge and Nacho, his daughters-in-law Judith and Fer, and his three granddaughters have been his support and inspiration<\/strong>, especially in recent years. I thank them very much for that support, which has surely helped to shape the personality of Benjamin, which we appreciate so much.<\/p>\n The passage of time will mitigate the pain we now feel, and highlight even further the many virtues of Benjamin.
