{"id":240886,"date":"2024-02-09T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-02-08T23:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cimne.com\/sin-categoria\/phone-data-helps-identify-humans-impact-on-biodiversity\/"},"modified":"2025-10-27T09:48:06","modified_gmt":"2025-10-27T08:48:06","slug":"phone-data-helps-identify-humans-impact-on-biodiversity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cimne.com\/es\/phone-data-helps-identify-humans-impact-on-biodiversity\/","title":{"rendered":"Phone data helps identify human\u00b4s impact on biodiversity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em\">Researchers from the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.creaf.cat\/\"><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em\"><strong>Center for Ecological Research and Forestry Applications<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em\"> (CREAF), the <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cimne.com\/\"><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em\">International Centre for Numerical Methods in Engineering<\/span><\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em\"> (CIMNE) and other Catalan and Spanish institutions have developed a novel methodology to identify threats to biodiversity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em\">In a <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cell.com\/heliyon\/pdf\/S2405-8440(24)01343-4.pdf\"><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em\">study<\/span><\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em\"> released in the journal <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cell.com\/heliyon\/pdf\/S2405-8440(24)01343-4.pdf\"><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em\">Heliyon<\/span><\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em\"> (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em\">Cell Publishing<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em\">), the multidisciplinary team, including former head of CIMNE&rsquo;s Natura, <strong>Dr. Pedro Arnau<\/strong>, overlapped drivers of change maps with distribution maps of threatened species to <strong>assess the impact of high human frequencyin highly sensitive ecological areas<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em\">Experts, led by Dr. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.creaf.cat\/staff\/lluis-brotons\"><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em\">Llu&iacute;s Brotons<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em\"> at CREAF, used two types of geolocated mobile phone information from a commercially available physical exercise platform to <strong>accurately identify the impact of human activity<\/strong> on the Kentish plover (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em\">Charadrius alexandrinus<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em\">) and Posidonia meadows (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em\">Posidonia oceanica<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em\">).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cimne.com\/cvdata\/cntr2\/spc2\/dtos\/mdia\/News\/PIKSEL_Biodiversity_CIMNE.jpg\" alt=\"Number of visitor (pedestrians and riders) on an area of Aiguamolls de l&rsquo;Emporda &#096; Natural Park in June 2021, coloured from yellow to dark  brown indicating 0 to 3000 visitors respectively. \" \/><br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em\"><span class=\"cimne green\">Number of visitors (pedestrians and riders) on an area of <em>Aiguamolls de l&rsquo;Empord&agrave;<\/em> Natural Park in June 2021, coloured from yellow to dark brown indicating 0 to 3000 visitors respectively.&nbsp;<br \/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 1.2em\">By assessing the breeding behaviour of Kentish Plovers and studying nests, nestlings and adults in the&nbsp;<em>Cap de Creus<\/em> Natural Park, experts have found that <strong>young birds are &ldquo;generally less sensitive&rdquo;<\/strong> to human presence than adults. Their research shows that groups of 250 to 700 people pose a low risk to Kentish plovers, while <strong>groups of 1,200 or more people &ldquo;appear to prevent&rdquo; these ground-nesting birds from breeding.<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em\">Similarly, researchers found <strong>even a reduced human presence disturbed Posidonia meadows<\/strong>. By scaling the risk from 0 to 1, results showed human marine activities over 0.1 exposed this endemic Mediterranean plant to a high ecological risk.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cimne.com\/cvdata\/cntr2\/spc2\/dtos\/mdia\/News\/PIKSEL_Biodiversity_posidonia.jpg\" alt=\"Posidonia Oceanica\" \/><br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em\"><span class=\"cimne green\"><em>Posidonia Oceanica<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 1.2em\">This research, supported by the Catalan Department of Climate Action, Food and Rural Agenda, used&nbsp;CIMNE&#039;s <a href=\"https:\/\/piksel-web.cimne.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>PIKSEL platform<\/strong><\/a> to gather multi-layered data that will enable &ldquo;concrete, spatially explicit actions&rdquo; to minimise the ecological impact of human activities on biodiversity.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em\">The study collected data from 2018 until 2021 and involved the work from eleven researchers at <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cerca.cat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em\">CERCA institutions<\/span><\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em\"> (Research Centres in Catalonia), and Catalan and Spanish universities.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Researchers from the Center for Ecological Research and Forestry Applications (CREAF), the International Centre for Numerical Methods in Engineering (CIMNE) and other Catalan and Spanish institutions have developed a novel methodology to identify threats to biodiversity.
