During his time at CENIT, and under the guidance of CENIT thesis advisors Dr. Sergi Saur\u00ed March\u00e1n and Dr. Mateu Turr\u00f3 Calvet, Dr. Pons focused his research on examining certain <strong>critical second-best issues for the definition of transport pricing schemes through three different case studies<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Pons explains \u201cThe issue is that <strong>pricing has been pushed as a suitable policy instrument to deal with transport externalities<\/strong> for many years. And we also have seen that recent technological developments enable the implementation of more sophisticated pricing schemes at affordable transaction costs. However, the policy maker\u00b4s job is not an easy one. They face <strong>numerous constraints and conflicting policy objectives when putting transport pricing schemes into practice<\/strong>. Falling investment in transport infrastructure and logistics has had a knock-on effect on the commercial development of the region as a whole.\r\n\r\nThe Latin American Development Bank, founded 50 years ago, recently funded an investment analysis study of the region\u00b4s intercity land transport sector, focusing specifically on road and rail. Irene de Cubas, CENIT\u00b4s Research Engineer for the report explains\r\n\r\n\"We know there is a direct correlation between a country or region\u00b4s GDP and transport infrastructure. In fact, <strong>Latin America<\/strong> is an extreme case, having a very limited transport network in relation to land area and population.
