The PIONEERS consortium has been awarded a <\/span>25 million euro grant from the European Commission’s Horizon 2020 programme<\/b>. CENIT will be working alongside other leading international think-tanks, ports, terminal- and transport operators, technology developers and public entities to form a <\/span>leading voice on the greening of European Ports, showcasing solutions to reduce Green House Gas emissions in ports whilst safeguarding competitiveness<\/b>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The research project is led by CENIT\u00b4s Javier Garrido, who explains \u201cPIONEERS really does describe the project, it\u00b4s an ambitious and groundbreaking mission!\u00a0 <\/span>We are completely rethinking all aspects of port operations<\/b>, that includes terminal operations, concession agreements, mobility, connectivity, fuels, models for cooperation and production, storage and use of energy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n In terms of practicalities, PIONEERS brings together the ports of <\/span>Antwerp, Barcelona, Constanta and Venlo <\/b>\u2013 all with differing characteristics – in order to address the challenge for European ports of <\/span>reducing GHG emissions and meeting Green Deal goals while remaining competitive and committed towards Blue Growth<\/b>.\u00a0 The ports will implement a total of <\/span>19 green port innovation demonstrations across four main pillars<\/b>:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Garrido continues \u201cWe\u00b4re really excited to be part of the PIONEERS team and to have an opportunity to <\/span>shape the Port of the future<\/b>.\u00a0 We will be working with themes including renewable energy generation and deployment of electric, hydrogen and methanol vehicles; building and heating networks retrofit for energy efficiency and implementation of circular economy approaches in infrastructure works.\u00a0 The 19 demonstrator projects will also focus on the deployment of digital platforms to promote modal shift of passengers and freight and ensure optimised vehicle, vessel and container movements.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n The Port of Antwerp<\/b> is already functioning as a lighthouse port, hosting the majority of demonstrators and <\/span>showcasing a real life Green Port<\/b>. The Latin American Development Bank report highlights the current investment gap in the region and reviews intervention strategies to tackle future challenges and trends<\/h3>\r\n[\/fusion_text][fusion_text columns=\"\" column_min_width=\"\" column_spacing=\"\" rule_style=\"default\" rule_size=\"\" rule_color=\"\" hide_on_mobile=\"small-visibility,medium-visibility,large-visibility\" class=\"\" id=\"\"]\r\n\r\nIncreased and sustained investment in infrastructure is of paramount importance for economic growth in any region, and nowhere is this truer than in the Latin American region where inconsistent and insufficient investment<\/strong> was noted as the main cause of slower economic growth<\/strong> during the mid-term period 2007-2012. Falling investment in transport infrastructure and logistics has had a knock-on effect on the commercial development of the region as a whole.\r\n\r\nThe Latin American Development Bank, founded 50 years ago, recently funded an investment analysis study of the region\u00b4s intercity land transport sector, focusing specifically on road and rail. Irene de Cubas, CENIT\u00b4s Research Engineer for the report explains\r\n\r\n\"We know there is a direct correlation between a country or region\u00b4s GDP and transport infrastructure. In fact, Latin America<\/strong> is an extreme case, having a very limited transport network in relation to land area and population.
