{"id":240954,"date":"2023-11-21T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-11-20T23:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cimne.com\/sin-categoria\/video-available-prof-willcox-digital-twins-can-revolutionise-decision-making\/"},"modified":"2025-10-27T09:49:41","modified_gmt":"2025-10-27T08:49:41","slug":"video-available-prof-willcox-digital-twins-can-revolutionise-decision-making","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cimne.com\/ca\/video-available-prof-willcox-digital-twins-can-revolutionise-decision-making\/","title":{"rendered":"[Video available!] Prof. Willcox: Digital twins can \u201crevolutionise decision-making\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-size: 1.2em\">Professor Karen Willcox, director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/oden.utexas.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Oden Institute for Computational Engineering and Sciences<\/a>, and member of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cimne.com\/m3264\/about\/scientific-advisory-council\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Scientific Advisory Council<\/a> at CIMNE, believes<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibm.com\/topics\/what-is-a-digital-twin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> digital twin technology<\/a> has the potential to &ldquo;<strong>revolutionise decision-making<\/strong>&rdquo; across &ldquo;science, technology, and society&rdquo;, with a particular relevance in the <strong>field of medicine, where its applications are &ldquo;tremendous&rdquo;<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 1.2em\">Dr. Willcox shared her views on digital twins yesterday in a public seminar at Palau Robert in Barcelona, as part of the lecture series <strong><em>Engineering challenges that may change the world: Reflections in the 50th anniversary of Barcelona&rsquo;s School of Civil Engineering<\/em><\/strong>, organized by the International Centre of Numerical Methods in Engineering (CIMNE), the Mathematical and Computational Modeling research group (LaC&agrave;N) and <a href=\"https:\/\/camins.upc.edu\/en?set_language=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Barcelona School of Civil Engineering<\/a> at the Technical University of Catalonia (UPC).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cimne.com\/cvdata\/cntr2\/spc2\/dtos\/mdia\/News\/karen-willcox\/presentation-kwillcox-2-768px.jpg\" alt=\"Prof. Willcox highlighted the revolutionary impact of digital twins during her talk\" width=\"768\" height=\"436\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 1.2em\"><span class=\"cimne green\">Prof. Willcox highlighted the revolutionary impact of digital twins during her talk<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 1.2em\">Prof. Willcox defined digital twin methodology, which generates a virtual model to reflect a physical object in real time, as a <strong>&ldquo;scientific grand challenge&rdquo;<\/strong> and referred to digital twins as the&nbsp;<strong>&ldquo;the next-generation of mathematical modelling and computational science.&rdquo;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 1.2em\">At the conference, presented by CIMNE&rsquo;s Scientific Director <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cimne.com\/sgp\/dir\/Profile.aspx?id=411\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pedro D&iacute;ez<\/a>, Dr. Willcox offered an overview on the history of digital twin technology, which was <strong>first applied in physical simulators at NASA<\/strong> to simulate outer space conditions to enhance decision-making. The speaker pointed out that advances in this technology can now improve healthcare in areas such as radiotherapy in oncological patients, helping doctors decide on the frequency of treatments.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 1.2em\">Dr. Willcox introduced the audience to the basic technical concepts of digital twin technology, emphasising the importance of <em>bidirectional feedback flows<\/em> between the physical and virtual models in order to adapt and adjust the latter to achieve better predictions of behaviour. Prof. Willcox also listed the<strong> challenges of predictive modelling<\/strong> in achieving a digital model, namely working with complex physical phenomena, high dimensionality of parameter spaces, computational constraints, and limited data.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 1.2em\">The speaker also reflected on the conceptualisation of digital twins, emphasising that, although this technology is commonly seen as related to big data, <strong>its core lies on a mathematical model<\/strong>, supported by a numerical model.
