Researchers processed training images for abandoned pet detection using techniques such as CNN-based resizing and colour channel splitting for image augmentation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em\">The proposed single-coloured image augmentation technique was used to&nbsp;<strong>boost the original training dataset <\/strong>o<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em\">f 17,500 animal images to 35,000 single-channel files, demonstrating how a deep learning model trained on the latter, augmented dataset, yielded&nbsp;<strong>more precise detection results.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em\"><strong>Hundreds of thousands of pets are abandoned every day around the world<\/strong>, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.four-paws.org\/our-stories\/publications-guides\/pet-abandonment-a-global-animal-welfare-issue\"><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em\">NGO Four Paws<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em\">. In Dr. Arnau&rsquo;s words, advanced image augmentation techniques can &ldquo;enhance IA capabilities to detect given up house animals in the wild&rdquo;, potentially allowing for &ldquo;new automation processes&rdquo; to make it&nbsp;<strong>&#8220;faster and cheaper&#8221; for rejected pets to find a new home<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/376490096_AIC2023_-15_th_Congress_of_the_International_Colour_Association\"><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em\">full paper<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em\">, entitled <\/span><i><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em\">Improving abandoned pet detection in natural spaces through adaptive single-coloured image augmentation techniques,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em\"> was authored by PhD student Oluwakemi Akinwehinmi, from the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cimne.com\/space\/1166\"><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em\">Information and Communication Technology<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em\"> research group, and former CIMNE researcher Prof. Pedro Arnau del Amo.
