{"id":240898,"date":"2024-01-29T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-01-28T23:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cimne.com\/sin-categoria\/cimnes-new-machine-learning-based-software-improves-dam-structural-safety\/"},"modified":"2025-09-22T12:10:36","modified_gmt":"2025-09-22T10:10:36","slug":"cimnes-new-machine-learning-based-software-improves-dam-structural-safety","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cimne.com\/ca\/cimnes-new-machine-learning-based-software-improves-dam-structural-safety\/","title":{"rendered":"CIMNE\u2019s new machine learning-based software improves dam structural safety"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em\">Researchers from the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cimne.com\/3190\"><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em\"> Machine Learning in Civil Engineering group at CIMNE<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em\"> have developed a new <strong>machine-learning based <\/strong><\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/ElsevierSoftwareX\/SOFTX-D-23-00478\"><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em\">software<\/span><\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em\"><strong> to predict structural behaviour of dams<\/strong>, allowing for enhanced decision-making and minimizing safety risks of these critical infrastructures.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em\">The tool, called <\/span><strong><i><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em\">SOLDIER: SOLution for Dam Behavior Interpretation and Safety Evaluation<\/span><\/i><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em\">, uses <strong>machine learning models instead of legacy simple linear regression solutions<\/strong>, allowing for greater flexibility, versatility, and precision, making it easier for engineers to detect anomalies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em\">Doctors <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cimne.com\/sgp\/dir\/Profile.aspx?id=566\"><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em\">Fernando Salazar<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cimne.com\/sgp\/dir\/Profile.aspx?id=999\"><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em\">Joaqu&iacute;n Iraz&aacute;bal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/andre-conde-vazquez-71a57438\/?originalSubdomain=es\"><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em\">Andr&eacute; Conde<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em\"> have published a <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2352711023002947#sec4\"><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em\">scientific paper <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em\">detailing the research behind the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em\">SOLDIER <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em\">software<\/span><\/strong> <span style=\"font-size: 1.2em\">and its capabilities, and how it allows for interactive data exploration, model fitting, and interpretation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em\">The user-friendly application, which can be <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/ElsevierSoftwareX\/SOFTX-D-23-00478\"><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em\">downloaded for free<\/span><\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em\">, follows multi-year research efforts, and it has been tested in different real-world settings. The software has garnered <strong>international recognition<\/strong> and won the highly competitive <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.verbund.com\/en-at\/about-verbund\/news-press\/press-releases\/2017\/09\/28\/energy2050-innovation-challenge-sieger\"><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em\">Verbund&rsquo;s Innovation Challenge in 2017<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em\">, awarded by the Austrian hydropower company Verbund.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em\">According to its authors, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em\">SOLDIER <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em\">can be used in the structural health monitoring of civil structures other than dams. <strong>Various CIMNE research groups have already utilized <\/strong><\/span><strong><i><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em\">SOLDIER<\/span><\/i><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em\"><strong> to perform model accuracy tests<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cimne.com\/cvdata\/cntr2\/spc2\/dtos\/mdia\/News\/SOLDIER_Fig.jpg\" alt=\"Scatterplot showing a response variable (displacement) as a function of the reservoir level (horizontal axis) and the air temperature (colors).\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 1.2em\"><span class=\"cimne green\">Scatterplot showing a response variable (displacement) as a function of the reservoir level (horizontal axis) and the air temperature (colors).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 1.2em\">This line of work began with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cimne.com\/vnews\/10131\/fernando-salazar-defends-his-phd-thesis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr. Salazar&#039;s PhD thesis<\/a><\/strong> in 2017 and continued under the framework of various local and international projects.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em\">According to Dr. Salazar, <strong>dams are &ldquo;critical structures&rdquo; that provide &ldquo;vital services&rdquo;<\/strong>, but pose &ldquo;potential risks&rdquo; in case of failure &ldquo;which, fortunately, are highly infrequent&rdquo;. In Prof. Salazar&rsquo;s words, &ldquo;it is essential&rdquo; to monitor water dams, &ldquo;not only to avoid accidents, but also to <strong>optimise maintenance tasks by detecting anomalies at an early stage<\/strong>&rdquo;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em\">The Spanish State Investigation Agency (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em\">Agencia Estatal de Investigaci&oacute;n<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em\">), European Commission&rsquo;s Regional Development Fund and NextGeneration programme, and Catalan Government&rsquo;s CERCA programme provided funds for this work.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Researchers from the Machine Learning in Civil Engineering group at CIMNE have developed a new machine-learning based software to predict structural behaviour of dams, allowing for enhanced decision-making and minimizing safety risks of these critical infrastructures.
