{"id":240818,"date":"2024-10-22T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-10-21T22:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cimne.com\/sin-categoria\/cimne-showcases-advanced-prediction-models-for-digital-twin-of-the-earth\/"},"modified":"2025-09-22T08:39:23","modified_gmt":"2025-09-22T06:39:23","slug":"cimne-showcases-advanced-prediction-models-for-digital-twin-of-the-earth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cimne.com\/ca\/cimne-showcases-advanced-prediction-models-for-digital-twin-of-the-earth\/","title":{"rendered":"CIMNE showcases advanced prediction models for digital twin of the Earth"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-size: 1.2em\">CIMNE researchers last week presented <strong>two use cases<\/strong> for monitoring air quality in Barcelona and predict energy consumption in extreme climate events in Catalonia, both implemented on the &ldquo;Data Lake&rdquo; of <a href=\"https:\/\/destination-earth.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Destination Earth<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, an ambitious European endeavour to create a high-fidelity digital twin of our planet.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 1.2em\">As part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/destination-earth.eu\/event\/3rd-destination-earth-user-exchange\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>3<sup>rd<\/sup> User Exchange Workshop<\/strong><\/a> of the project, Dr. Ignasi de Pouplana and Laurence Sigler shared <strong>a <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cimne.com\/cvdata\/cntr2\/spc2\/dtos\/mdia\/News\/DestinE_Dust_barcelona.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>micro-scale air pollution model<\/strong><\/a> to determine air quality at the street level in Barcelona. This advanced model <strong>connects various sources of federated data to determine dust particle concentration of less than 10 microns.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 1.2em\">The event was hosted by the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT) in Darmstadt (Germany), and jointly organized with the <strong>European Space Agency (ESA)<\/strong> and the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF).<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 1.2em\">Researchers were able to <strong>demonstrate the computational capabilities of Destination Earth&rsquo;s centralized repository<\/strong> (<em>Data Lake<\/em>) using CIMNE&rsquo;s <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/KratosMultiphysics\/Kratos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Kratos Multiphysics<\/strong><\/a> computing framework, yielding output data on the centre&rsquo;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gidsimulation.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>GiD<\/strong><\/a> visualization platform. This allows for high definition, short-term visualization of air quality, with direct application to public health surveillance.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 1.2em\">The experts, affiliated to CIMNE&rsquo;s <em>Structural and Particle Mechanics<\/em> innovation cluster and <em>Pre, Post and Digital Technologies<\/em> innovation unit, based part of this model upon the <a href=\"https:\/\/piksel-web.cimne.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PIKSEL project<\/a>, a management and predictive tool built on computer models to study environmental, economic, and social phenomena in Catalonia. PIKSEL was designed in coordination with the Catalan Government.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 1.2em\"><span class=\"cimne green\">&nbsp;<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cimne.com\/cvdata\/cntr2\/spc2\/dtos\/mdia\/News\/DestE_Dust_Architecture_CIMNE.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/>Overview of use case architecture for the Urban-scale air pollution model <br \/>using Data Lake&rsquo;s Near-Data Computing. The use of CIMNE&#039;s Kratos Multiphyisics and GiD solutions are part of steps 4 and 5.<br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Machine Learning to predict extreme energy demand<\/h3>\n<p style=\"font-size: 1.2em\">Dr. Gerard Mor and Miriam M&eacute;ndez took the stage at the workshop to present their use case for <strong>predicting peak electricity demand during extreme environmental events<\/strong>. The model combines several environmental and socio-economic variables to forecast energy consumption at postcode level in Catalonia during heat waves and intense cold spells.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 1.2em\">Researchers at CIMNE&rsquo;s <a href=\"https:\/\/beegroup.cimne.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Building, Energy and Environment<\/em><\/a> innovation unit used Machine Learning technology and combined several data sets from different sources in the &ldquo;Data Lake&rdquo; of Destination Earth, allowing for easy extrapolation to other geographies and use cases.<\/p>\n<h3><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cimne.com\/cvdata\/cntr2\/spc2\/dtos\/mdia\/News\/202410DesinationE_Attendees.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/h3>\n<p style=\"font-size: 1.2em\"><span class=\"cimne green\">The CIMNE delegation at the event.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>About <em>Destination Earth<\/em><\/h3>\n<p style=\"font-size: 1.2em\">The International Centre for Numerical Methods in Engineering (CIMNE) has been selected as a partner for the <a href=\"https:\/\/destination-earth.eu\/event\/3rd-destination-earth-user-exchange\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Destination Earth<\/strong><\/a><strong> initiative<\/strong>, a program by the European Commission to develop a highly accurate digital model of the Earth on a global scale to aid Europe&rsquo;s &ldquo;green transformation&rdquo;.
